Architects to stage urban intervention at LFA 2008
11 June, 2008

Parking bays and design aren’t two words which normally trip off the tongue together, but a competition run by Ramboll Whitbybird is using design to draw attention to just how much space is given up to cars in the city.

It has shortlisted 14 teams to create a series of “urban interventions” during the 2008 London Festival of Architecture to turn a series of parking spaces green.

Overnight on Thursday 3 July, volunteers will turn 14 car parking spaces on Store Street ‘green’ to highlight how much space in the city is given up to cars. Each team will have a budget of £200. The shortlisted teams were chosen based on the designs ability to create discourse and to challenge perception, its use of sustainable materials, and its buildability.

Leal Bao’s attitude on design

baolei_end_london.jpg

(The last dinner with CDR member at Chinatown Leong’s Legends restuarant; photo by William Hailiang Chen)

Leal Bao who is one of founders for CDR has written down his thoughts about the attitude on design, particularly for those Chinese students who are eager to study abroad, look for ‘fame’ and try to enter famous school. Frankly, if I have time and write something about my thoughts on studying at AA, I probably will point out some similar issues. Surely, below is from his bottom of heart even I have known him for a while but I never really know what he is thinking. He is a person who seldom talks too much(I meant ‘to speak out his opinions’), very quite and focus ‘On line’/his pretty apple ’toy’;) ……pitty, CDR loses a design ‘Geek’!

Attitude 1

Continue reading ‘Leal Bao’s attitude on design’

Chinese Designers’ Region(CDR)@V&A

Finally, CDR has been set up formally as a non-profit organisation. Starting from the first meeting with Get It Louder curator Ou Ning in April 2006 and also ‘Post Awakening’ party at my flat on 8th October 2006, CDR has held quite a few meetings now. We have tried to curate a collective exhibition for almost 2 years now. Finally, we begin our first step.  www.cdregion.com

A bit of Wednesday afternoon humour!

An e-mail – “A bit of Wednesday afternoon humour!” is sent out by my colleague Andy Edge:

—‘ I attended a party this past weekend.  After checking out all the well-dressed guests at the party, I spotted an attractive woman (standing alone) across the room.   When I approached and asked her name, she coyly replied… “Carmen.”

Trying to maintain some sort of conversation with her, I responded with

“That’s a beautiful name, is it a family name?” “No,” she replied. “I gave it to myself, because it reflects the things I like most in the world – cars and men.”

Then she asked, “What’s your name?” “Golftits,” I replied. ’—

Sure, he just copied and pasted. Not sure who is the original author.

Arts for aid – Sichuan Earthquake

Just got an e-mail from artist Andrew Chong Boon Pok, just want to pass on the message:

Call for Art Works for the China Earthquake Fundraising Art Exhibition @ The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art

Dear artists,

The recent earthquake that hit China with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale has already claimed more than 68,000 lives, and left more than 300,000 people seriously injured. Countless other victims have lost their homes and are struggling to cope with the tragic loss of family members. Urgent support is now needed to help these survivors rebuild their homes, a necessary first step to rebuild their lives.

As a Chinese artist from the disaster-affected area, I hope to help through the way I know best: through art. For this reason I am writing to appeal on artists to donate works to the Fundraising Art Exhibition. They can be any form of artwork that you think appropriate (2D or 3D).
