Pecha Kucha V Night

Finally, I have attended the Pecha Kucha in Japan Embassy. Actually, it was my first time to attend the offical Pecha Kucha although I have been organising some at my home with friends. Basically, rule is 20 slides and 20 seconds/slide…..everyone can present their ideas…..it was curated originally by Kleith Dythan architects office in Tokyo.

It was relax and informal presentation. With plenty of Saki, Asahi Beer and snacks of Sushi…..different kind of ways presenting …….it was an enjoyable and memorable night. The best talk I felt is a Dutch female architect Fenna Haakma Wagenaar who presented how the life and environment affects her works. One of comments she has was the creativities in SANAA (Kazuo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, Tokyo. where she have worked for)……the chaotic working environment where it came out a pure white box stylish building, specially comparison between a stacking rubish boxes and final proposal of The New Museum in New York Bowery. Comparing to Foster clean environment, she stated it was a mistake to work in there. We all laughed about it. Obviously, she also learned from acentric Japanese culture and developed a ‘ridiculous’ funny product – a fake woman’s leg for man and a fake man’s arm for woman. (ha, man needs woman’s leg or woman needs man’s hug to sleep.) When you see the photos, you will ‘lauve’ it. It was an infaltable toy; unfortunately no permission for taking any photos inside. Final presentation was given by an artist Emi Miyashita who is currently studying at St. Martin on Fine Arts subject. Her micro-scale of drawing on Penis, according to her it was about male dominance society and the reverse. In the scene of drawing, a tiny woman wondering around a giant penis…..Her English is not very good as well…all she could said was ‘penis’……we just laughed ….well on one moment just speechless……you can even hear everybody held the breath.(20 seconds are such a long time)……..her works was showed in last summer in Japanese Embassy( with Penis)……… Anyway, it just very funny to end up with her presentation. The whole presentation was varies from Art to design and social organisation etc. I think that sum up ‘a Japanese’ which I can’t explain it, peculiar, hilarious, exciting and ‘shameless’….haha….

One of funny thing was Peter and I were unblievable identical like a twins dressing the bloody same style!!!! so here you go ……after the show, we went out with Peter’s two female friends (poduct designer on Glasses and graphic designer) to Japanese restaurant in Piccadilly…………she has a large earhole which impressed me ………no prejudice………..she is a very nice person too…………another girl who is going to Xiamen in China for looking glasses making manufactory.  Well, I need a pair of new glasses ‘designed and made in China’!!!!!………..it was just interesting to meet people who are not bloody architects…..

I think Peter and I like the honest Japanese carpenter who works in a local village……..don’t u think?

The Captain’s Table

PHOTOGRAPH BY JONATHAN ROOT.

My boss Rod Sheard was interviewed by FT and story was featured on Finanical Times’ ‘How To Spend It: The Bonus Issue’ on 11th feb 2008. You will be disappointed that he didn’t talk about how he got the idea about Olympic Stadium design. However, you will get plenty of tips how to spend the money on the best food on the decent restaurant where you can be inspired from;)

•The Captain’s Table: The design of the £496m London Olympic stadium is the responsibility of Rod Sheard, senior principal architect at HOK. ”I associate pretty much all my stadiums with particular restaurants where I’d go with the clients to resolve any problems or issues that emerged during the project… Wembley makes me think of meeting at the Dorchester Grill with the Football Association’s Adam Crozier to generate some momentum when the project was stalling. For the Sydney Olympic Stadium, we caught the ferry to Doyles for some of the city’s best seafood – though no shellfish for me as I have an allergy – on Watson’s Bay. The Emirates Stadium… takes me back to Bibendum with the club’s board of directors.”

The Year of Rat

My colleague Tien Yu sent out this amazing funny Chinese New Year greeting ppt file. Unfortunately, he doesn’t know who is the author behind this. So I couldn’t give anyone credit……..remember when you create a nice ppt, write down your name and contact! (total 18 slides, need to click and scroll down to see them ALL!)
