Peter will give a talk at Digital Explorers II. Some of you might have seen his stuff when he presented it in my party ‘Post Awakening’ last year October. Please go and cheer with him;)

Peter Ayres,

Project Designer at Heatherwick Studio. The studio exists to realise architectural, sculptural and product designs at varying scales. Many of these designs involve a process of capturing raw data from the natural world, using digital technology to translate them back into usable forms.

It is really disappointed I couldn’t go on time for this lecture. I have only seen last few slides…but friends told me it was really good one……obviously the applauding he got told you something audience  really enjoyed his lecture. He seems really bloody young!!!..he has a cool website as well.   http://chrisbosse.de/projects/geneticpavilion/  Lecture was so different from yesterday the ‘old gunners’ lecture in Building Centre, it was full of fresh air and fearless to the future ………gave me some motivation to continue my digital exploration;)…… Continue reading ‘Chris Bosse-Bubble-ism/architectures of foam’

Hanif Kara and Paul Westbury

store-street-ident.jpg

Tonight I went to see Peter Cook host a conversation between Hanif and Paul…but I was really fallen sleep when Peter gave introduction(a bit wordy)…..Tong xingyu also went as well…wrote a long ‘essay’ about how he was disappointed by the man he respects most. http://www.abbs.com.cn/bbs/post/view?bid=1&id=335115792&sty=1&tpg=1&age=0 I am too lazy to write any feedback…just don’t want to waste my time;)….Hanif’s powerpoint presentation was very funny and provocative, at least he did give 4 wellkown architects’ opinions on engineer and also how he dealed the relationship with them….most funny thing is ..he said Will Alsop never really care and respect him …just told him to make things work;)……….Paul was repeatly talking about his ‘Reference’ all the time which some paintings (Francis Bacon’s painting Study after Velázquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X’  Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599-1660).  It is kind of making sense of transition from classic to bacon’s analysis relative to classic archi to modern one but still it is hard to relate what is in his mind for inspiration in what way to architecture or engineering. Specially, he was talking about curving parametric stadiums;) ( although for me as well, inspiration can be from anywhere.)

Hanif Kara and Paul Westbury

Store Street #5 brings together two of the worlds most eminent engineers.

Hanif Kara is Zaha Hadid’s engineer of choice having just completed work on the Wolfsburg Science Centre and currently working on the Napoli-Afragola Train Station. Paul Westbury is a Partner and Director of Buro Happold and leads the Design & Technology Board promoting blue sky thinking and innovation. Both speakers have influenced and inspired the architects with whom they have worked.

Peter Cook hosts and the conversation will mix insight, wit and gossip. There will be visuals and the bar will be open throughout.

A Life in Light_James Turrell

Today afternoon, I went to see James Turrell’s‘A Life in Light’ exhibition in Louise T Blouin Foundation. The exhibition will finish on 28th this Wednesday. If you haven’t experience James’ Light then it is worthy to go. But you better  to be student for free entrance otherwise it costs 10 pounds. For 10pounds, it is quite expensive. (If you have seen his works before in gallery then it is not worthy to spend that.) Because I have seen his works in Zurich (a big retrospective) few years ago and also another one in Albione gallery (Oct, 2004) which is part of Norman Foster’s complex residential tower adjacent to Foster’s office on the Battersea Bridge; comparing to those shows, this time all of James’ works are his old classic stuff. (Projector etc.) Except the following one selected from ‘Tall Glass’ series which he is using new technology LED light to let two light-sources meet thus it amuses you and changes the ambient. From extremely red to blending with blue, your emotion and heart is open to encounter with the spirit of color and light. I think this is the best one which recently he has done.

I have seen some really stunning one in Zurich; specially a luminated space which I felt floating in the space and I couldn’t figure out where the light source came from. Also, another stunning strange painting which appears a light inside the painting. (this one is hard to describe it, you got to see it and believe it.)

I am delighted that AA School has invited another light master Olafur Eliasson to have a talk at the end of March. I am looking forward to it!

Wembley Arch

This post was locked during last month because I am a bit worried about the images and Wembley story……..Finally it made it, it is all over!…..http://www.wembleystadium.com/……http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/6379165.stm…………………according the news I saw from TV, the budget have gone quite a journey from initial design fee 326 million, then when it was on site in 2000 it rised to 445 million; after delayed in 2003 the cost rocketed to 757 million due in completion in 2006; however, it delayed again, at the end finally almost 800 million when it was finished on Friday 9th March……..

Post originally on 21th Feb 07

I have been working in HOK Sports for almost half year now. Finally, I have a chance to visit Wembley Stadium on 14th Feb 07…….here is the Great Arch which Foster has been talking about…….it is very nice during the night time. The project architect was sitting next to me month ago. He have told me he has been working on the project for more than 4 years since he joined the company. ….I can dig out more photos which I toke during the visit but don’t put too much hope for that as my crap digital camera. Experience it by yourself!……go for a game or concert!…George Michael will give out a concert in June there.

Demolished Stadium

Amazing scene, A football stadium in Beijing has been dramatically demolished as part of works for the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing.

Click BBC Video I am wondering in future building would pretty much like a computer component and need to be updated anually. There is no point to design a building last forever. Important is how those ripped off components to form another new or recycle back to new updated component.  Am I clear?

Demolishing is not the key point….the turth is where those rubble concrete have gone………..demolishing is the way of chinese philosophy……it is healthy within Chinese context………..We also said planning can’t catch the change of situation………….here, demolishing rather than alteration.

The Penetration of Light

The Penetration of Light

William Hailiang Chen, winner of the 2002 Nicholas Boas Travel Award, spent a month in summer photographing light in Roman churches. A study of the transformative powers of light on the human soul, and the intimation of divinity found in its interaction with the colours, materials and forms of classical buildings, these photos suggest an experience of wordless thought. This scholarship, established in the memory of Nicholas Boas, is awarded annually to two AA students wishing to study Roman architecture and urbanism at British School at Rome.
