Book Launch: ‘Forming Climatic Change’@AA School

Finally, my winning entry ‘Reef Surface Mobile Island’ (highlighted on blue color) for Environmental Tectonics Competition is published and the book launch will be on Tuesday 25 Nov between 12 to 2:30pm at AA School. See detail below:

Book Release

In 2006 and 2007 the Environmental, Ecology and Sustainability Research Cluster sponsored the Environmental Tectonics competition.  For the compilation of the book the curators sought projects that redefined common environmental parameters and explored design potential – while formulating critical and informed responses to the relation between aesthetics, ethics, tectonics and qualitative environments. The competition offered a unique opportunity to exhibit and publish relevant and important new projects as well as to understand current strands of investigation within this realm. Throughout, the focus of the publication is on ideas – ideas arising from an exploration of the complex variables surrounding environmental, sustainable and climatic design. The collected work looks beyond the typical carbon conservation solutions and instead finds resonance in projects that celebrate, organize and uncover new potentials in environmental design.

A few excerpts from the book are posted on:

www.aaees.net

The book is available for purchase for £15.00 from AA Publications and to mark the publication, will be available for £10.00 on Tuesday 25 November between 12.00 and 2.30 in the Back Members’ Room at the Architectural Association.

1001 Buildings You Must See Before You Die

 1001_buildings-to-see_whchen.jpg

I got a ‘bonus’ money from Valerie at AA Photo Library. One of my photos about Naoshima Islands in Japan was selected and published by Quintessence in the following book. AA Photo Library  has hold more than hundreds photo slides taken by me. This one actually is the first one got published by other publications apart from AA publication and Chinese publication. I have not seen the book yet so I am not sure which photo was selected. As this is quite a ‘bonus’ for me, I am just a fan who like to take photos of buildings. I have donated the money to Sichuan Earthquake relief program. Hopefully, more photos will be picked!!!

Gwangju Biennale 07 book

Coming back from China after Christmas break, surprisingly I received Gwangju Biennale book which I have requested for a copy as my collaboration project ResoNet won the first prize on Bright LED competition. I thought they won’t give me any copy. Actually, because the book was quite heavy so it toke more than 3 months to arrive by ship mailing. I will say it is quite a good resource for light design. Funny thing is some of projects are not really about light at all. Hani Rashid (asymptote architecture studio, USA) has wrote a forward for the book. He is also one of jurors for Bright LED competition. Unfortunately, by the time book was published, the competition result has not been released yet. Therefore, you can only see ResoNet project among 200 shortlists projects inside the book. For more about Reso-Net project, see post http://www.whchen.com/blog/?p=563

韧用有两个出发点,而这两个出发点也同时回答了您所要问的问题;

The Penetration of Light

The Penetration of Light

William Hailiang Chen, winner of the 2002 Nicholas Boas Travel Award, spent a month in summer photographing light in Roman churches. A study of the transformative powers of light on the human soul, and the intimation of divinity found in its interaction with the colours, materials and forms of classical buildings, these photos suggest an experience of wordless thought. This scholarship, established in the memory of Nicholas Boas, is awarded annually to two AA students wishing to study Roman architecture and urbanism at British School at Rome.
