——————————————– ResoNet | Bloom
Designed by: Mark Tynan & William Chen
ResoNet awakens from a dormant sleep to ‘Bloom’ in Frankfurt’s green-belt. Emerging from its origins in the forests of Cumbria; it morphs to reform in the urban forests of skyscrapers and buildings.
ResoNet visualises the resonant frequencies inherent in the surrounding environment, via the interaction of the public and adjacent stimulus detected by the LED net. By using Lo-Fi techniques ResoNet creates a cascade of light triggered by the vibrations detected across the structure. Continue reading ‘ResoNet at Luminale Biennale, Frankfurt’
spironanodietoms is a ballet of abstract form to music.
music and form are interconnected. the visuals were performed in real time to the score and is audio reactive. a second pass of composition is then added to the visuals to complete an intricate relationship of motion and sound.

Naturally, magnetic fields are invisible, but the scientists from Space Sciences Laboratory at NASA have made animated photographs to make them visible. To create this, they use 3D compositing along with sound-controlled CGI, that make the fields dance in an “absolutely gorgeous movie”, called the Magnetic Movie.
This video is really interesting for everyone, but mostly for physics-addicted, that are now able to see with their own eyes how does a magnetic field look and “dance”.
Magnetic Movie is a film by Semiconductor. They made magnetic fields visible in a very nice way, 3D CGI at its best, while scientists from NASA’s Space Sciences Laboratory excitedly describe their discoveries. Watch it!
EDIT: To set things straight, this video is a 3D CGI visualisation of how magnetic fields could look like. It is not real, just a mix of video footage with computer generated imagery.
Architects to stage urban intervention at LFA 2008
11 June, 2008
Parking bays and design aren’t two words which normally trip off the tongue together, but a competition run by Ramboll Whitbybird is using design to draw attention to just how much space is given up to cars in the city.
It has shortlisted 14 teams to create a series of “urban interventions” during the 2008 London Festival of Architecture to turn a series of parking spaces green.
Overnight on Thursday 3 July, volunteers will turn 14 car parking spaces on Store Street ‘green’ to highlight how much space in the city is given up to cars. Each team will have a budget of £200. The shortlisted teams were chosen based on the designs ability to create discourse and to challenge perception, its use of sustainable materials, and its buildability.
I have received an invitation for private view at Yung Ho Chang’s exhibition – ‘Poly & Chai’ at V&A on 30th May. For such a long time, his reputation is much higher than what I expected to experience his works. Almost two years ago, his ‘perspective box’ – a small installation at ‘China Power Station’ exhibition at Battersea Power Station did not convience me. Perhaps, it is due to the limited time for preparation. (That exhibition is more like a modern ’fast meal’ gives you the taste of what is contemporary art and architecture in China.) V&A has been curating this show for more than 4 years since I met the curators few years ago. This time, it suits my ‘taste’ and expectation. Well, I haven’t seen it on site yet. At least from the image, it has the quality – materality, light, texture, space, form etc…….oh, looking forward to seeing him on the openning.

I still have one of his photo which I toke on ‘Tu Mu’ exhibition at AEDES gallery in Berlin 2001 when I was in second year at AA School. Since then, I haven’t seen him in person.
Yung Ho Chang in the V&A’s john madejski garden
from: june 2nd until september 1st, 2008
to coincide with the V&A’s major exhibition ‘china design now‘, one of china’s leading architects, yung ho chang will create a specially designed installation ‘poly & chai’ in the V&A’s john madejski garden.
‘for the latest in the V&A’s summer garden commissions, chang has devised a set of free standing screens inspired by traditional chinese garden design that will be arranged around the space for visitors to walk through. the screens will be made from green recyclable plastic paving blocks, commonly used in parking lots and construction sites in china‘.
‘yung ho chang established china’s first private architecture firm, atelier FCJZ, in 1993. as well as overseeing a number of high profile architectural projects in china, chang is head of architecture at MIT (massachusetts institute of technology). his work can be seen in china design now, which showcases the latest in architecture, fashion and graphics to emerge from china’.
For such a long time, I wanted to upload this video but I never had time to manage it. Having researched on youtube, I have found out Tiantian has uploaded this video which she have done the sound design for. This video was produced for internal exhibition in my company HOK Sport. Tiantian and her boyfriend Simon has helped us to put all information about ResoNet project together to produce a documentary short film. Please also see post of ArtHOK-ResoNet launched .

ResoNet for FRED 07 has won 1st prize in Bright LED international competition co-organized by Designboom and Gwangju Biennale Foundation, Korea. Entrants were required to demonstrate experimentation and innovation on the theme of LED lighting. Total 3431 designers from 92 different countries have participated.
ResoNet is a collaborative installation and would like to thank all people involved in its production, especially:Tai Hollingsbee, Francesco Anselmo, Andrew Cowell, Patrick Tynan, Amr Assaad,Fred Pittman, Chong Boon Pok. Steve Messam, Fold Gallery, FRED and the people of Kirkby Stephens.
HOK Sport finally launched ArtHOK – ResoNet. ArtHOK is a show dedicated to its staff and will exhibit selected art works by staff. My collaboration project ResoNet is the first one to be held.
This weekend I can finally have a bit of rest. Week before was AA DRL’s 10 years anniversary and almost everyday went out for dinner meeting with Liu Yanchuan’s friends then this week I was chasing the time on organising the exhibition at my company. Unfortunately the exhibition preview is for staff only I couldn’t invite any friends or people who have helped the project. One of great benefit thing is I finally finished ResoNet video with the help of Zhu Tiantian (Sound design) and her boyfriend Simon (Film editing). Soon, I will launch it on youtube. Please check out later. (For video, please see ResoNet Video Presentation )
Exhibition contains four parts: 1.photographs on wall; 2. award and publication on display plinth; 3. a small sample of ResoNet. 4. ResoNet documentary video on TV display.
Photographs were hang on the wall next to reception desk.

Coming back from China after Christmas break, surprisingly I received Gwangju Biennale book which I have requested for a copy as my collaboration project ResoNet won the first prize on Bright LED competition. I thought they won’t give me any copy. Actually, because the book was quite heavy so it toke more than 3 months to arrive by ship mailing. I will say it is quite a good resource for light design. Funny thing is some of projects are not really about light at all. Hani Rashid (asymptote architecture studio, USA) has wrote a forward for the book. He is also one of jurors for Bright LED competition. Unfortunately, by the time book was published, the competition result has not been released yet. Therefore, you can only see ResoNet project among 200 shortlists projects inside the book. For more about Reso-Net project, see post http://www.whchen.com/blog/?p=563

I am not a fan of politics/economy and never concerned this in the past. However, since last year April I have put quite a lot of information about politics/economy due to the current social/economy uncertainty. I am not responsible for the content of external internet sites which I copied the content at the time I read. Those information doesn't represent my political view rather just the information I have collected which might infulence my judgement on viewing the world. I am open minded and eager to find out the 'truth'. You are welcome to post your opinions.
